What phone you have? The newer quad band phones get great service in and out of urban areas using Cingular.
Quad band has nothing to do with getting service in the US. A dual band phone will get you all the service you ever need in the USA. The 2 extra bands in "quad band" are ones used outside of the US.

I had to have a good laugh following the greenpeace links from the macrumors article.

    * the "making waves" site had a pic and an article stating "our volunteers outside weere handing out real organic green apples". Only thing is the apples in the picture are red!

*what are greenpeace more upset about...? the fact that there are tonnes of electronic waste in a garbage dump? or the fact that there are hundreds of poor and underpriviledged kids running around the dump collecting the waste in order to survive? I am sure that by fixing Apple's problems they will remove these kids from the dump! What is supposed to be in a garbage dump....the waste or the scavaging kids?

    New hardware will be good.

Can't say I'm too excited about a Movie store - it'll be u.s only and thus only available to a small percentage of the world.

Apple makes money off of iTunes - they won't tell us how much, but it is a money maker (all be it insignificant compared to the iPod)
I think that you mean Apple makes money off of iTMS (iTunes Music Store). And yes, it would be interesting to know how much they really make.

Having been bitten numerous times by McAfee, I never believe their press releases.

Way back, I subscribed to their virus and firewall software. I tested the firewall, and it worked. Until they updated it to a slicker looking interface. Some sixth sense made me test it again, and bingo, my computer was exposed. McAfee customer "support" was not interested. They had my annual subscription, and that was all they wanted.

After ripping all McAfee code out of my PC, I was dismayed to find that my employer signed up for McAfee products.

Months and months of slow PC, followed by bricking thousands of employee PCs with their encryption-at-rest software.

I, too, once used their product when it was a little puppy. It was fast and frisky and did its job. Then it started growing and became a suite of solutions. And it got fat and slow and turned into a beast. I finally slayed the beast -- and others too who had let these puppies-grown-beasties into their homes -- and eventually went Mac. No animals in my home now.

But FW isn't mac only by choice or need. Abit, Asus, Gigabyte and others all offers boards with FW. It was a common feature for motherboard manufacturers for some time. Will TB be included in their low end boards? More then likely not but from mid tier to high end boards will have it.This sadly reinforces the "enthusiast" market looking for features.

Who cares what color an iPod is. Shouldn't really matter. Color does not affect funtionality. What matters is what is on the inside.

Yes, it was the "pre-announcement" that I find very un-Apple. The fact that the product doesn't have a solid name just adds to the strangeness. Is there a precedent for this at Apple announcements. Sure, I've heard of products that I couldn't go out and get today or even for 4 weeks, but Q1 2007?

This seems to me the "plan b" that had to get announced because the real "one more thing", out of left field announcement, hit a snag.

Maybe it wasn't the iPhone, but something didn't go exactly a planned on the 12th.

Anyone hear how they liked the satcast of the keynote in London?

That is actually a very intutive outlook on the apple annoucement.

    Quite Intersting
    Rob

Nice pieces of kit. Would this put the top of the line iMacs in the realm of professional photographers who have to do a lot of post processing? Or is the monitor not up to scratch for that? I can see huge external RAID arrays equipped with Thunderbolt to cater for the safe storage of large amounts of RAW files :D

Presumably with a warrant and not on the fly at the side of the road without a warrant. Although I remember reading about some sort of site the gov has set up with the carriers where they can get info without warrants (patriot act thing).

Still they store it and can access it - nobody except my touches my iPhone and my Laptop. I actually enjoyed looking at the map. Nobody can access it on they fly on the road.

Honestly, can you try to post without arguing against claims I never made? That is at least 3 times now and it shows a lack of honesty or reading ability. I am not sure which.
    The above text contains:
Strawman argument/claiming what I said wasn't true without providing any proof/Insults

I never said it was going to Mac only (though you have accused me of that twice). I agreed with the insinuation that it could be. I never said manufacturers would have to add it separately. I did say that the article you posted said only that it would be available to all and that it didn't say all would add it. Mainly, I said that, because you know, the article doesn't actually say that. Here's another recap for you:
Person 1: Thunderbolt = Mac Only
    You: Bingo
Me: Post to an article showing that it won't be Mac only
You: Claim you were talking metaphorically to save your ass
Myself and Econgeek: Explain to you why what you saved your ass with won't be true
You: Go on a rampage of insults

I think we are done. No point in debating someone that doesn't understand what he is reading and also makes up things to reply to. Arguing against someone that uses strawman arguments or misses common subtleties in language is bad enough. Arguing against someone that is making up things to argue against is pointless.Pot, meet kettle.

Yeah, if they can fit a Conroe into the iMac, more power to Apple. I just hope it doesn't turn it into the blast furnace my iMac G5 was.

From what I can tell Merom is just a Conroe that can operate at a lower TDP. They're all just fabricated off the same piece of silicon. (Someone posted an image on this.)

I believe only Rev. As and Rev. Bs are blast furnaces, Rev. C iMac G5 was supposedly much quieter thanks to the bulged case.

I know the image you're talking about. Meroms on the inside, Conroes on the outside ring, Celerons furthest out.

Here in Sweden, the Police says that their goal is to increase safety, not catch people. I'd rather have a drunk driver stay at home because of an app warning of a checkpoint than get in the car and get caught.

That's the problem, though. People WILL go out after drinking, thinking they can circumvent the law.

Umm... how does Penelope Cruz and "convertible" have anything to do with an iPod? Just because Bono, Kanye West, and "red" are together, I don't really see how that equals a new red iPod.

I'm personally of the opinion that anyone that thinks they have any privacy in this digital age is lying to themselves. There is no privacy, every single time you do anything on the internet or cell phone, some device somewhere is keeping a log of it. This is just one more way. But like other people mentioned, unless you're a criminal or the victim of a highly sophisticated stalker, then no one really cares about your private data.

With that said, if Apple is in fact storing location data when you specifically turn location services off on your iPhone, then this is a big problem that needs to be remedied. Their TOS specifically states that they are not collecting this data when you turn location services off and that is a flat out lie.

@Multimedia: Ok, but if Clovertown is available as early as November, I can't imagine Steve making Santa angry and not updating the Mac Pro until January. It's not a great time to buy a computer... yet. Things are moving too fast right now. In sixty days, we'll be looking at quads and octos... I still can't believe that it's coming that fast.

Care to actually show me what app that will actually do what I was talking about?
I want to play music from iTunes on my Mac as the source, and multiple airplay devices as the target. Currently I can only play to Airport Expresses and Apple TVs (and upcoming Airplay certified speakers). I want Apple to include all iOS devices to that list of target devices.
As mentioned multiple times in this thread: Airfoil
Airfoil runs on your Mac, Airfoil Speakers on your iOS devices. Start Airfoil Speakers (which is a free app) on your iOS devices and then select inside Airfoil on the Mac on which devices you want your sound being played. You can let it play on multiple devices at the same time and the app does a decent job of synchronising the sound. In addition to iOS devices any Airport Expresses and Apple TVs can also be selected. And you can select to broadcast the sound of individual applications on the Mac only (eg, iTunes only to avoid other system sounds being transmitted).

Or, for simpler needs, just enable Home Sharing in iTunes and play your Mac's iTunes content directly from your iOS device.

HD - I'd agree with you plus you void the warranty doing it yourself.

RAM - Disagree. Definitely worth the effort to do it yourself. OWC or Crucial for RAM. OWC has RAM rebate for sending in your old RAM. It takes 5 minutes.....

I was thinking of having to take off the screen and use the anti lint kit, it's a pain, but I just realized I mixed up the RAM its under by the speakers.... totally easy... oops.

But, $50 too to bad to just have it done.

This doesn't look like an iPhone 3GS?

I say again Laguna, are you really liable to get these two pieces of hardware (manufacturing branding and all) confused?

I simply can't see it, especially with the huge size discrepancy.
