i agree. i would never buy a computer that didn't have a dvd burner....and i'd never advise someone else to either

Remind me to never ask you for computer advice.

The parents bought a top of the line g4 iMac back when superdrives were 2x.

They still haven't used the superdrive to burn a dvd.

It's a shame there's almost no way Verizon will carry an Apple branded phone. I just don't see it happening. Looks like I'll have to get an LG Chocolate for music on the go...

If Apple does an "unlocked" phone (meaning, the kind of phone that used to be the rule, not the exception, which wasn't locked to a specific service provider) you'll be able to use it on Verizon (of course, assuming it supports Verizon's connection mechanism, which is different from Sprint or Cingular, but most of the phone manufacturers out there have no problem with this).

The downside, of course, is that you miss out on the 2-year financing offers from Verizon, and still have to pay for the 2-year financing (your rate isn't any cheaper if you don't take their "free" phone offer...). That having been said, the US phone companies offer crap for long-time customers ($100 off a phone for signing up for another 2-year contract? Puhlease!) and IMHO it makes more sense to just get the damned phone you want and throw that $100 "discount" aka high-interest loan away than confine yourself to Verizon's pathetic arsenal of hobbled (key features disabled, etc) phones.

After watching the ad 3 times, I *think* I like it. It treads just the right sign of 'schmoltzy' without going too far over. It (the device) looks gorgeous too, from a purely personal view.

It hasn't won me over (iPad v Playbook), but there's not doubting its a good ad.

You do realize that the Playbook is pure, 100%, no-money-back, spun-glass vaporware...right?

No. Homeopathy does not require people to forgo medicine that actually works.

Of course it doesn't require it, just like Christianity doesn't require you to stop being gay. However, some who use homeopathy trust it more than modern medicine.
Also, I never intended to make a metaphor betweenhomeopathy and this app. I was saying that Apple cannot be worried about "medicine without a license" because they allow the homeopathy apps in the store.

Here's a video on the latest developments in Lybia. The "No Fly Zone" really means, "No Fly for Quadaffi plus Yes Bombing for US and UK".

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/42143060#42143060

Is it me, or does war seem kind of rediculous now.

I mean, I understand the need for "non occupational forces", but this is getting kind of rediculous. It almost seems like it's almost a capitalist motive to demonstrate weapons for sale at every opportunity. :D

 Do you even know whats going on in Libya right now? These are all strange conclusions to make considering that there are French fighter jets flying over Libya.

Apple seems to be moving to the app-store model where you pay less at first but then you pay the same for every upgrade.

iLife has done this for years and now Aperture is doing the same thing. Frankly, I prefer it to the old way.

On iOS you pay ONCE and then all upgrades are free.

Is this not the case on the Mac App Store? If I'm going to pay $80 for aperture there, I want to get Aperture 4, 5, 6 and 7 as a download and not be paying an upgrade fee each time.

I thought no upgrade fees was the new model (just pay once.)

Certainly for iOS apps that's the model.

Update: June on the AppStore. Sounding like it will ship with Lion.

Do people seriously have that many songs?!!! seriously?!!!

220gb = 50,000 songs?!!!!! That is totally not necessary.

Apple discontinue that dinosaur! It makes you look bad to just have it on your website.

WHY?? I bought a ipod touch 8GB with my new macbook pro... but I should've got a classic I have 70GB of music and videos. The only reason I got a touch is because I like the games but if I get a iphone 5 I will also get a classic .
Also I have a old ipod video and you can use it as a 80GB portable harddrive. I will also email steve jobs.... is it sjobs@apple.com or steve@apple.com?

You make it sound as though this is such an obvious distinction that Apple could never get a trademark for "app store". But apparently this argument is not so strong in trademark law as Apple actually has the trademark already. If that were not the case how could they sue another entity for trademark infringement?

NO... they do not "have it already".
It's still in the opposition phase. No registration has been granted.
    http://sites.google.com/site/wjohnstone/appstoretm.jpg

Learn how to read TESS and understand the coding.

Apple is filing a preemptive lawsuit against Amazon.
This is perfectly normal for anyone who is going through the trademark process.
The lawsuit's merits will be determined by the outcome of the opposition phase from the USPTO.

Now step away from the keyboard.

Microsoft have managed to get one thing right in Windows. A specific tool (Add/Remove Programs) to delete a program. That's something that I genuinely feel is lacking in OS X and this idea of clicking and holding in LaunchPad makes sense. It's imple enough: most users who own an iPhone will have no trouble in adopting this method. And what's more, it makes it instantly accessible to anyone who uses a mac. In addition, it goes a step further than Microsoft. It avoids making more novice users from having to delve in to a complex window of settings. A step in the right direction? I think so!

So personally, I think this is a very simple yet very effective change to make to OS X and should be a welcome sign of the things to come in Lion!

That's probably the most unreliable function in Windows. It's an afterthought that was pieced together when they realised they can't count on sw developers to provide an uninstall app for their sw

Obviously it's going to have a Blu-Ray drive and go head to head with the PS3.

Apple may even include some games like Bejeweled that you can play with the remote.

Everyone is fighting over the living room now. You can bet your bottom dollar, that Apple, Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo are going to be knocking on your door for the next few years. If you let them in, are they going to run for the bathroom or kitchen? Not likely. They are going to be running for the living room. And they are going to be coming with cameras. They are going to want to stay for a long time. They'll want cash up front and then monthly allowances.

Who does that leave out? The one conglomerate that's never made a piece of hardware: Google. So where will Google look for help in integrating their software in living room hardware? Duh! Apple! But Apple better watch out, as soon as Google gets in the living room through Apple they'll open their services up to all hardware manufacturers and leave Apple in the dust. I just hope Apple has considered that likely possibility. Apple's like the Trojan horse which is carrying Google. We all know what happened to the soldiers inside the horse--they went and killed people. But we never hear about what happened to the actual horse. And that actual horse is Apple. Let's just hope they're full of something more than Google, or even worse just full of s_it.

And for all the non-legal "experts" out there.

Windows can be trademarked because while it is a generic term, it is not a generic term that describes the product or service.

If "Windows" was a window company, it could not be trademarked because it is a generic terms that describes the product or service.

    A huge difference.

Regarding the launchpad... I can't remove applications anymore...
When I click "option" the icons get to "shake" but there is not X sign to click to delete the app... they just wiggle and can't be deleted.
    Any of you the same?

Also very difficult to move them around...

In my experience launchpad was working better on preview 1!

    Ideas?
Yea it's a little buggy right now. You can delete apps the same as as before with some added frustration.

    1. Press and hold, CMD+OPT+CTRL (so they all wiggle)
    2. Next press and hold one app until they stop wiggling.
    3. Now click the apps you want once to delete them.
    4. Make sure you hold those 3 keys throughout all steps.

The only thing I haven't figured out yet is adding apps manually. When I drag them to the LaunchPad icon, nothing happens.

It seems like any time there's even a slight implication of any software being tuned to be easier to use, there's a barrage of negative comments lamenting how it's been "watered down."

What's with all this baseless elitism?
(Over uninstalling an app! Such a trite matter)

I see lots of people saying they'll stick with their version, or that it's the end of whatever paradigm they had before... why? Because it's what... "harder to use?" Who is that going to impress?

Not just for Lion, but this is exactly what happened with FCPX.

Which direction would the evolution of software go? Harder? Of course not...

I really wonder what the reasoning behind all this negativity is...

I dont think this is elitism...

Perhaps we can just say that Lion will offer a new level of refinement for a Mac OS.

Lets hope the iOS uninstall is implemented as a real uninstall...otherwise what's the point.
