The games cost the companies millions to develop on each platform, and it is their intellectual property in the first place. Adding DRM to someone else's music takes a push of a button.
Which costs tens millions to operate and to license. Keep in mind that it's not any given music service which elects to use DRM, it's the recording companies that insist upon it. The reason why Fairplay is relatively lenient compared to other schemes is that it is locked down to a narrow set of compatible devices. You can copy your music to any number of iPods, for example--which goes far beyond "fair use" under the law. Win some, lose some.

I don't get your logic there at all. As I've just said, DRMd media isn't the same as software. If I didn't want a dominant Sony Walkman 20 years ago, I bought a Panasonic and my tapes still played. If I decided my Philips DVD Player was rubbish, I could buy a JVC and the DVDs still played.
You bought into an available open standard. There were competing proprietary ones as well--just none as popular as CD or DVD. There is still an available open standard (albeit often at a higher price per track). The availability of more limited music doesn't limit you one bit. You chose the limited version over the unencumbered one because it was faster, easier, and/or more customizable.

As far as I'm concerned, anything I OWN, I should have fair use rights over, even if I wish to change the make of my player. Steve Jobs makes a big deal about us OWNING our music when we buy from iTunes. If I truly own it, I should have the right to use it how I wish. Which is it?
You do own the DRMed music file. You can use it without continued payment and without time limits. Ownership of the intellectual property of others has always been nuanced. There's ownership of content (lyrics, performance, etc. can all have different owners), of distribution (including licensing for public performance), of a license to the media (on a CD belonging to you or in a digital file under your control), and of course various forms of renting and leasing. When you buy music from iTunes (or any other pay-once service), you have indefinite (timewise) usage rights and control of that license. You do not, nor can Apple legally grant you, total control over the file.

If DRM is necessary, it should be interoperable between different manufacturers. The aim of it should be to prevent illegal copying, not allow vendor lock in.
There's nothing wrong with vendor lock-in so long as an easily attainable, universal solution also exists. Since you are not obligated to buy anything from iTMS if you own an iPod, there is no justifiable harm. What I would like to see is a service permitting you to assemble custom CDs from individual tracks (instead of being forced to buy entire albums) and lower prices from iTunes. Both of these require the recording industry to embrace the Internet, rather than fight it.

I was digging on Wikipedia and other sources. I must have missed the part where Microsoft either sold or kept their stocks. I couldn't find hard evidence that they truly sold it. If they own 1/100 of a percent, then they are just keeping a light leash for some corporate reason.

But here is a hypothetical question you all should think of. I think of it myself sometimes. I'd like to and hope it isn't true.

Since Microsoft did help support competition between the two, what if they shared OS features? Anyone can lie up on stage if they are a good actor about their OS being original and that such and such company is copying them. But if Bill Gates struck another deal that allowed Apple to release the features we love in OS X before Vista, that would be unusual.

Just Question. I just get the feeling that something isn't right.

Asides from that, I never like hearing Ballmer talk on stage. It isn't because he is affiliated with Microsoft. He just talks in such a way that everything is generalized. "Vista will change the way you look at your computer" or something like that. He was ranting about MS Office creating new ways of writing a document. *sigh*

Oh and I use both platforms!

For gaming Athlon Alienware PC. I did a price quote to see if the All-New 7500 was similar to the Mac Pro on pricing.

It is 100-200 cheaper than the Mac Pro! I don't want an/another Alienware PC The difference between the two are the video cards. 7900 for Alienware and 7300 for Mac Pro. I'm not sure which one is a better card. Also, the 7500 has SLI, which would be great not just for gaming, but for rendering 3d projects! Any ideas if the Mac Pro would support SLI?

That Mac Pro is beautiful! Someday, I would love to own one after I finish paying off my college loans :(

I bought the Zune (original) on the day it came out. I was new to mp3 players and ipods, etc. My wife already had an ipod and liked it. The Zune, for me, was a good choice. The music subscription service for $15 per month was great.

Where it failed was integration with Windows itself. I was HUGE into Windows Media Center. My living room entertainment center was a Windows Media Center PC equipped with a TV tuner and I bought the $300 Media Center Extender. It was awesome to be able to record TV and watch it on my extender in another room. Why didn't the zune allow syncing of TV shows recorded in WMC? Somebody made an awesome app to take care of this, though. I could watch my recorded TV while waiting for PT (Physical Training) to start. The Zune was great! Even now, I have to run 2 programs to get recorded TV on my ipad.

But they totally failed at marketing the Zune in my opinion. It was a great idea, and a great device. Microsoft though, are a bunch of old fogies trying to be "cool", and it didn't work out.

I'm honestly sad to see it go. I love competition. It drives innovation. Look at all of the iPad competitors coming out. They may fail, but this is what makes better products for the consumer.

The high price comes from the features like USB hard drive and printer sharing. So yes there are cheaper alternatives but you'd be hard pressed to find these features on other routers.

As for the update, I'm sure Apple will release an update. If not you will probably find the updater leaked to the net when the router starts shipping late next month.

    Hello,

I need a replacement power supply for my Mac G4 Quicksilver (part 614-0157) but all the prices I've seen are outrageous. I am in the process of converting an ATX power supply for use in the Mac but I discovered that I do not have a +25V line. Is there an adapter or alternative power supply that will give me 25V?

These are the specifications on the Mac PSU:

    +250VS 4.5A
    +250VL 2.5A

I appreciate any help that could help me bring my Mac back to life. It is currently a stylish paperweight.

An interesting and for me a most welcome example @Steviem, since I'm just starting to learn the very basics of AP3. Therefore I have some practical questions about the way you organize your hirarchy:
    1) Any reason why you don't use 'albums' in the maps and/or projects '09/'10, instead of the numbered (sub)maps you keep using for these years?
    2) Why do you use numbers in these (sub)maps and projects, instead of giving a name for identification about what's in them ("Travel", "Country", "Family" and the like)? It was my presumption that this kind of naming was one of the strongest arguments for adopting Aperture.

For an online store, I use eShox, it has everything built right into it and you can even change the themes to make your own store design. As for web hosts, I can host it for you if you would like and I can work with you to help others get online.

it happened on my 13" MBP when using it with and HDTV with a HDMI-MiniDP adapter. when that happens i usually try shift control eject to put the display in 'sleep' and wake it back up without putting the machine to sleep and that helps too atleast in my situation. hopefully might be another alternative tip that works.

My Mac never sleeps, but I do experience the static problem when the Mac causes the displays to sleep. Simply turning the display off then back on fixes it without having to do anything with the Mac.

Ok, I know nothing about nothing when it comes to Macs and music software/equipment. We have a Mac G4, not sure what the current OS is, but I am going to get it upgraded.

For my boyfriend's birthday, I am looking to find a music software production program. He had been using Cakewalk Metro up until our computer crashed a couple years ago. He really wants to get back into it, but when I looked up Cakewalk, I saw that Metro is quite outdated and most current cakewalk products are for windows. So can anyone please, please, please tell me what an equally good music software is (by the way, he makes mostly drum type electronic music via keyboards and drum machines). I would be eternally grateful.

    Thanks!

I'm in favour of this move. CDs were great (along with cassette tapes and LPs) because you could play them in any CD player and you could buy the CDs themselves from any shop. For some odd reason we don't get this with MP3 players and I do think that's anti-competitive. If I want to move to a different MP3 player or buy my music from another store to use on my iPod then that should be my choice and Apple should have to accept that. At the moment I am quite happy with my first iPod (aside from the frequent crashes when playing podcasts...) but if I decide to change to something else that is Mac compatible and beats the iPod then I don't want to have to re-purchase my iTunes music that I have bought. If DVD Jon has a way to allow reasonable consumer choice then FairPlay to him.

I have no wish to see Apple get walloped by the competition but the sort of consumer freedom that this offers should keep them honest since if they **** up then we can move some place else.

4.3. Or 4.3.1. I would take either one right now. Prob the same for 99% of iPad 2 users.

Wow. Let's hope it looks better than that diagram. Anyways this would be the ultimate iPod (Could be a 4 or 5 inch screen). Of course, the screen needs to be more scratch resistant than previous generations. And they have to bump up the resolution on their iTunes store. But I'd be surprised if we see this anytime soon.

Good call, chances are it is just bad. If you get another one that doesn't work, could be a bad firmware on the drives that make it incompatible with a Mac. Have you tried plugging it into a Windows PC?

With my car system, volume 18 with my iPhone maxed is equivelent to around 30 with my Nano - at this volume I have the sound of gentle hissing when paused. Not cool.

What kind of system are you connected to that the iPod volume even makes a difference? Mine connects to the truck's USB port and it's treated like a "line in" - the volume can only be adjusted with the stereo deck in the dash.
